What is the name of the fictional city ruled by Aragorn in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings?

The story behind the answer

The fictional city ruled by Aragorn in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings is Minas Tirith.

Minas Tirith is the chief city of Gondor and the setting of a major battle against Sauron’s forces. The city is built on the lower slopes of Mount Mindolluin and is arranged in seven levels, each protected by walls and gates. Its white appearance gives it the name “the Tower of Guard.”

Aragorn enters the city during the War of the Ring and is crowned king after Sauron’s defeat. Before his coronation, Minas Tirith is governed by the Stewards of Gondor, including Denethor II. The city’s history and political importance make it different from Minas Morgul, the enemy stronghold formerly called Minas Ithil.

Another common mix-up is Edoras, the capital of Rohan. Edoras is where Théoden rules and where Meduseld stands; it is not Aragorn’s royal city. Osgiliath, once Gondor’s capital, lies in ruins during the main events of the story.
