What is the name of the father of the first Tirthankara Rishabhanatha?

The story behind the answer

The father of the first Tirthankara Rishabhanatha was Nabhi.

In Jain tradition, Rishabhanatha was born to King Nabhi and Queen Marudevi in Ayodhya, also called Vinita. Rishabhanatha is regarded as the first of the 24 Tirthankaras of the present descending half-cycle of time. He is also known as Adinatha, meaning “first lord,” and Nabheya, meaning “descendant or son of Nabhi.”

Nabhi is especially important in Jain cosmology as the 14th and final Kulakara, a series of early culture-guiding figures who helped humanity during a changing age. Jain accounts credit Rishabhanatha with organizing society and teaching essential skills, while his son Bharata is traditionally associated with the name Bharatavarsha for India.

A common mix-up is confusing Rishabhanatha’s father Nabhi with his son Bharata or with Mahavira’s father, Siddhartha. Rishabhanatha’s mother was Marudevi, and his traditional birthplace was Ayodhya; his liberation is associated with Ashtapada, often identified with Mount Kailash.
