Treebeard is the Ent who leads the Ents in Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.
Treebeard, whose Elvish name is Fangorn, is one of the oldest beings in Middle-earth. He lives in Fangorn Forest and meets Merry and Pippin after they escape from the Orcs. Their account of Saruman’s destruction of trees helps persuade him that the Ents must act.
Treebeard and the Ents then march against Isengard in one of the novel’s major turning points. Ents are tree-like shepherds created to protect trees, while Huorns are a related but more mysterious kind of forest being. Treebeard is sometimes mistaken for the forest itself because both share the name Fangorn, but Fangorn is both the character’s Elvish name and the name of the forest.
