The Ent leader known as Treebeard in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings is named Fangorn.
Fangorn is one of the oldest living beings in Middle-earth. The name refers both to the character and to Fangorn Forest, the ancient woodland where he lives. Merry and Pippin meet him after escaping from the Orcs who captured them, and they learn that he is an Ent, a tree-like shepherd of forests.
Treebeard initially resists taking sides in the conflict with Saruman because the Ents have avoided the wars of other peoples. His view changes when he sees how Saruman’s forces are destroying Fangorn’s trees. He calls an Entmoot, or council of Ents, which leads to the assault on Isengard.
Fangorn is sometimes confused with other Ents, especially Quickbeam, whose name is Bregalad. Treebeard is the oldest and most prominent Ent in the novel, while the forest itself is also named Fangorn after him.
