Rivendell is the Elvish refuge where the Fellowship is formed in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.
Known in Sindarin as Imladris, Rivendell is a hidden valley and settlement founded by Elrond during the Second Age. It becomes a place of healing, learning, and counsel, preserving important knowledge from the long history of Middle-earth.
Frodo reaches Rivendell after being wounded by the Witch-king on Weathertop. Elrond heals him, and a council later meets to decide what should happen to the One Ring. The council concludes that the Ring must be destroyed in the fires of Mount Doom, and the Fellowship is then established for the journey.
Lothlórien is another Elvish realm, ruled by Galadriel and Celeborn, which the Fellowship visits later. Valinor is a distant realm across the sea, while Esgaroth is the human settlement commonly called Lake-town. Those settings are related to Tolkien’s world but are not the refuge where the Fellowship begins its mission.
