What is the name of the Elvish refuge where the Council meets in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings?

The story behind the answer

Rivendell is the Elvish refuge where the Council meets in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.

Also called Imladris, Rivendell is founded and ruled by Elrond. It lies in a hidden valley east of the Misty Mountains and serves as a place of healing, learning, and refuge for Elves and trusted visitors.

Frodo is brought to Rivendell after being wounded by a Nazgûl. There, representatives of several peoples discuss the danger of the One Ring. The Council decides that the Ring cannot be hidden or used safely and must be destroyed in Mordor.

Rivendell is sometimes confused with Lothlórien, another Elven realm. Lothlórien lies farther south and is ruled by Galadriel and Celeborn; it is not the site of the Council of Elrond.
