Quenya is the Elvish language J.R.R. Tolkien developed most fully in his fiction.
Tolkien based Quenya’s sound and structure chiefly on languages such as Finnish, while also drawing on his wider knowledge of historical linguistics. Within Middle-earth, Quenya is associated especially with the High Elves and is presented as an ancient, prestigious language.
Sindarin is another major Elvish language in Tolkien’s legendarium and is more commonly spoken by many Elves in the Third Age. Because Sindarin is prominent in The Lord of the Rings, readers sometimes identify it instead. Quenya remains the language Tolkien developed with especially extensive vocabulary, grammar, and historical relationships.
Tolkien did not invent only isolated words. He created language families, sound changes, writing systems, and historical connections, treating language creation as a central part of world-building.
