Quenya is the Elvish language J.R.R. Tolkien developed most fully for the Eldar.
Quenya is one of Tolkien’s constructed languages and is associated especially with the High Elves, or Eldar. Its structure and vocabulary draw inspiration from languages including Finnish, Latin, and Greek, although Quenya is an original language rather than a direct copy of any of them.
Within Tolkien’s mythology, Quenya originated among the Elves of Valinor and was later brought to Middle-earth by the Noldor. It became a prestigious and ceremonial language, while Sindarin was more widely spoken among many Elves in Middle-earth.
Readers often call every Elvish speech “Elvish,” but Tolkien created several distinct languages. Sindarin is another major Elvish language, whereas Quenya has a more formal, ancient status in much of the legendarium. Tolkien continued refining his languages throughout his life.
