Quenya is the Elvish language Tolkien described as the language of the Eldar in Valinor.
Tolkien developed Quenya as one of the major languages of his legendarium. It was influenced especially by Finnish, Latin, and Greek, and Tolkien created its grammar, vocabulary, and history with unusual depth. In the mythology, Quenya was associated with the Elves who journeyed to Valinor and with the high culture of the Eldar.
Quenya is not simply a synonym for every Elvish language in Middle-earth. Sindarin is another major Elvish language, descended from a different historical branch and widely used by Elves in Beleriand and later regions. The two languages are related within Tolkien’s fictional history but are not interchangeable.
In The Lord of the Rings, Quenya appears in names, poems, ceremonies, and formal speech. The Ring-verse begins in the Black Speech of Mordor, while the title “Namárië” is a famous Quenya lament spoken by Galadriel. Tolkien’s linguistic invention helped give Middle-earth its historical depth.
