The Elvish language spoken by the Noldor in much of J.R.R. Tolkien’s mythology is Quenya. Tolkien based its sound and structure chiefly on Finnish, while also drawing on other languages.
Quenya was associated with the High Elves, especially the Noldor, and remained a prestigious language in Tolkien’s imagined history. In Middle-earth, it was often used in formal, historical, or poetic contexts rather than as the everyday language of every Elf.
A common mix-up is Sindarin, which became the more widely spoken Elvish language among many Elves in Middle-earth. Quenya and Sindarin are related within Tolkien’s linguistic history, but they are distinct languages with different roles and development.
