Quenya is the Elvish language that J.R.R. Tolkien developed most extensively.
Tolkien constructed Quenya as part of a family of languages for the Elves of Middle-earth. He based much of its sound and structure on his interests in Finnish, Latin, and other historical languages. In the fictional history, Quenya is associated especially with the High Elves and resembles a formal or classical language.
Sindarin is another major Elvish language and is more commonly spoken by many Elves in The Lord of the Rings. The two names are therefore frequently mixed up. Quenya appears in names, songs, inscriptions, and ceremonial speech, including the greeting “Elen síla lúmenn’ omentielvo,” though Tolkien continued refining his languages throughout his life.
