What is the name of the dune where the Opportunity rover got stuck in 2005?
Answer
Purgatory Dune
Answer
Purgatory Dune
The dune where NASA’s Opportunity rover got stuck in 2005 was Purgatory Dune.
On April 26, 2005, Opportunity drove into a small, wind-shaped ripple in Meridiani Planum. The loose sand behaved very differently from the firmer terrain the rover had crossed before: all six wheels dug in, reaching roughly wheel-hub depth. The ripple was only about 30 centimeters tall, but its hidden softness turned it into a serious mobility hazard.
Mission engineers spent more than five weeks studying images, testing simulated Martian sand at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and developing cautious escape maneuvers. Opportunity eventually freed itself on June 4, 2005, after moving only about a meter while its wheels spun far more than they would have on solid ground.
The name “Purgatory” referred to the long, difficult extraction process. A common mix-up is confusing Purgatory Dune with Endurance or Victoria crater: those were major Opportunity exploration destinations, whereas Purgatory Dune was the sand trap that temporarily halted the rover’s journey.
