What is the name of the dragon slain by Túrin in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Silmarillion?

The story behind the answer

The dragon slain by Túrin in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Silmarillion is Glaurung.

Glaurung is known as the Father of Dragons and serves Morgoth during the First Age. He possesses not only physical strength and fiery power but also a hypnotic gaze and a talent for manipulating people through speech. These abilities make him a uniquely dangerous enemy in the tragic story of Túrin Turambar.

Túrin confronts Glaurung at Cabed-en-Aras and kills him with a sword thrust from below. The dragon’s death does not undo the destruction caused by his lies and enchantment, which are central to the tragedy surrounding Túrin and his family.

Glaurung is distinct from Smaug, the dragon in The Hobbit. Ancalagon the Black is another First Age dragon, while Scatha belongs to later history associated with the Northmen and the Grey Mountains.
