What is the name of the dragon killed by Túrin in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Children of Húrin?

The story behind the answer

Glaurung is the dragon killed by Túrin in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Children of Húrin.

Glaurung is described as the first of the great dragons of Morgoth, the chief enemy of the Elves and Men in Tolkien’s First Age mythology. Unlike the winged dragons that appear later in the legendarium, Glaurung is a wingless fire-drake. He possesses intelligence, speech, and a hypnotic gaze that enables him to deceive and dominate his enemies.

Túrin Turambar confronts Glaurung near the ravine of Cabed-en-Aras. Following the dragon’s attack on the people of Nargothrond and its manipulation of Túrin’s life, Túrin hides beneath the dragon and fatally stabs it in the belly with his sword Gurthang. Glaurung’s death does not undo the tragedy he has caused, particularly the curse associated with Túrin’s family. Readers sometimes confuse him with Smaug, the later dragon of The Hobbit, or Ancalagon, Morgoth’s enormous winged dragon from the War of Wrath.
