Glaurung is the dragon defeated by Túrin in J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium.
Glaurung is known as the Father of Dragons and serves Morgoth during the wars of the First Age. He possesses not only immense physical power but also a hypnotic gaze and a talent for deception. His manipulation of Túrin and Túrin’s sister Nienor drives the tragic events of The Children of Húrin.
Túrin eventually confronts Glaurung near the river Narog. Concealed beneath the dragon, Túrin strikes upward with his sword Gurthang, mortally wounding him. Glaurung’s death does not undo the damage caused by his lies and enchantment, which is why the episode remains one of Tolkien’s darkest heroic tragedies.
Glaurung is not Smaug, the dragon of The Hobbit. Ancalagon the Black is another First Age dragon and is described as the greatest of the winged dragons. Scatha is a later dragon associated with the Grey Mountains.
