What is the name of the disputed border between India and Pakistan in Kashmir?
Answer
Line of Control
Answer
Line of Control
The disputed border between India and Pakistan in Kashmir is the Line of Control. It separates the Indian-administered and Pakistani-administered parts of the former princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, functioning as a de facto military boundary rather than a legally recognized international border.
The line grew out of the ceasefire that ended the First Kashmir War in 1949. After the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, India and Pakistan formally renamed the ceasefire line the Line of Control in the 1972 Simla Agreement. Both sides agreed to respect it without giving up their competing claims over Kashmir.
The Line of Control is roughly 740–776 kilometers long and runs through some of the world’s most difficult mountain terrain. Its northern end near NJ9842 leads toward the Siachen Glacier, another heavily militarized and disputed area. The line is often confused with the Line of Actual Control, which separates Indian- and Chinese-controlled territory farther east in Ladakh.
