Rockstar North is a Scottish video game studio based in Edinburgh and a subsidiary of Rockstar Games. It formed the core of Grand Theft Auto V’s development team, leading production while collaborating with other Rockstar studios around the world.

The studio’s history goes back to DMA Design, founded in Dundee in 1988. DMA Design created the early Grand Theft Auto games and developed Grand Theft Auto III under that name. After Take-Two Interactive acquired the company, it became part of Rockstar Games and was renamed Rockstar North in 2002.

Grand Theft Auto V was not made entirely by one office: more than 1,000 people across Rockstar’s international studios contributed to the project. However, Rockstar North was the principal or core development studio, making it the canonical answer to this question. Rockstar Toronto, Rockstar London, and Rockstar San Diego assisted with other Rockstar projects or supporting work, but they were not the studio behind GTA V.
