Ainulindalë is the creation account in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Silmarillion. The Quenya title is commonly translated as “The Music of the Ainur.”
In the account, Eru Ilúvatar creates the Ainur and presents themes for them to develop through music. Melkor introduces discord, but Ilúvatar incorporates the resulting conflict into a larger design. The music then becomes a vision of the world, called Eä when it is brought into being.
Ainulindalë establishes several ideas that shape Tolkien’s mythology: the primacy of creation, the limits of rebellion, and the way suffering can be folded into a greater purpose. Its style resembles a sacred creation narrative rather than a conventional adventure chapter.
It is easy to confuse Ainulindalë with the other sections of The Silmarillion. Valaquenta describes the Valar and Maiar, while Quenta Silmarillion recounts the history of the Silmarils and the First Age. Akallabêth concerns Númenor.
