Armenelos was the capital city of Númenor in J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium.
Armenelos stood on the Meneltarma’s lower slopes in the central region of the island kingdom. It was also called Armenelos the Golden and was the seat of Númenórean kings. The city represented the political and cultural center of a realm founded by the Edain who survived the wars of the First Age.
Númenor was a large island in the Great Sea, located between Middle-earth and Aman. Its people received long life and other gifts from the Valar, but they were forbidden to sail to the Undying Lands. Over time, fear of death and resentment of the Ban of the Valar grew among many Númenóreans.
Under King Ar-Pharazôn, Númenor’s corruption reached its peak. Sauron became a powerful influence at court, and the king attempted to challenge the divine order. In the Downfall of Númenor, the island was destroyed and Armenelos was lost beneath the sea.
