What is the name of the city ruled by Orual in C.S. Lewis’s Till We Have Faces?

The story behind the answer

Glome is the fictional kingdom ruled by Orual in C.S. Lewis’s Till We Have Faces.

The novel’s setting is a small, ancient kingdom shaped by fear of the god Ungit and by political pressure from neighboring peoples. Orual becomes queen after the death of her father, and her rule frames the later portion of her life story.

Glome is not merely a backdrop for the Cupid and Psyche retelling. Its court, temple, harvests, military concerns, and religious customs create the social world in which Orual’s jealousy and moral struggle develop. The kingdom also gives the novel a historical and mythic atmosphere without identifying it with a specific ancient nation.

Readers can confuse Glome with Narnia because both are invented lands in Lewis’s fiction. They belong to different literary worlds: Glome appears in the adult mythic novel Till We Have Faces, while Narnia is the setting of his children’s fantasy series.
