The chimpanzee sanctuary in South Africa founded in collaboration with the Jane Goodall Institute is Chimp Eden.
Chimp Eden, formally the Jane Goodall Institute Chimpanzee Eden, is a rescue and rehabilitation sanctuary near Barberton in Mpumalanga, South Africa. It provides long-term care for chimpanzees rescued from the bushmeat, pet, laboratory, and entertainment trades, including animals removed from conflict-affected regions.
The sanctuary opened in 2006 in collaboration with the Jane Goodall Institute. It was established by Eugene Cussons and is located within the Umhloti Nature Reserve, an area of roughly 1,000 hectares. Rather than simply displaying chimpanzees, the centre works to rebuild social relationships and natural behaviours by introducing rescued animals into compatible groups.
The name can be confused with Ngamba Island, a chimpanzee sanctuary in Uganda, or Tchimpounga, the Jane Goodall Institute’s major rehabilitation centre in the Republic of the Congo. Sweetwaters is a Kenyan wildlife sanctuary, while Gombe Stream is the Tanzanian research site where Goodall conducted her landmark field studies.
