What is the name of the character played by Denholm Elliott in the Indiana Jones films?

The story behind the answer

Denholm Elliott played Marcus Brody in the Indiana Jones films. Brody is an academic, museum director, and longtime friend of Indiana Jones, appearing prominently in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989).

Unlike Indy, whose adventures take him around the world, Brody is usually associated with universities, museums, and scholarly research. In Raiders, he helps connect Indy with the U.S. government mission to find the Ark of the Covenant. In The Last Crusade, he joins the search for Indiana’s missing father and the Holy Grail.

Elliott’s character is also remembered for his absent-minded humor. Brody becomes comically lost while visiting the United States in Raiders, despite being a respected scholar. Elliott died in 1992, so Marcus Brody does not appear in person in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008); that film honors the character and actor with a portrait and a statue at Marshall College.
