Answer
The Downfall of Númenor
The Downfall of Númenor is the catastrophe that destroys Númenor in Tolkien’s legendarium.
Númenor was an island kingdom founded for Men who had aided the Elves during the wars against Morgoth. Over time, many Númenóreans became fearful of death and jealous of the immortal Elves. Their desire for everlasting life contributed to rebellion against the Valar and increasing hostility toward the Eldar.
King Ar-Pharazôn eventually sailed west with a great fleet to challenge the Valar. In response, Eru Ilúvatar changed the shape of the world, sank Númenor beneath the sea, and removed the Blessed Realm from ordinary mortal access. Elendil and his sons escaped and later founded realms in Middle-earth.
The account appears primarily in the Akallabêth, a section of The Silmarillion. The War of Wrath concerns the defeat of Morgoth, while the Kin-strife is a later civil war in Gondor.
