What is the name of the capital city of Gondor?

The capital city of Gondor is Minas Tirith. It is the principal stronghold of Gondor in the later part of the Third Age and the setting for one of the most important battles in The Lord of the Rings.

The city was originally called Minas Anor, meaning “Tower of the Sun.” It was built on a spur of Mount Mindolluin beside the White Mountains and became Gondor's capital after Osgiliath was devastated and increasingly abandoned. Its later name, Minas Tirith, means “Tower of Guard” or “Guarded City.”

Minas Tirith is famous for its seven concentric levels, each protected by walls and connected by steep streets. The Citadel sits at the top, crowned by the Tower of Ecthelion and the White Tree of Gondor. In the film adaptation, the city was presented as a vast white stone fortress climbing the mountainside.

Osgiliath was an earlier and historically important capital, which explains the confusion. Minas Morgul was a corrupted former Gondorian city, while Barad-dûr was Sauron's fortress in Mordor—not a Gondorian capital.
