What is the name of the Brutalist cathedral in Tokyo designed by Kenzo Tange?
Answer
St. Mary's Cathedral
Answer
St. Mary's Cathedral
The Brutalist cathedral in Tokyo designed by Kenzo Tange is St. Mary’s Cathedral.
Completed in 1964, St. Mary’s Cathedral is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Tokyo. Tange won a competition to replace an earlier Gothic cathedral destroyed during the air raids of World War II. Construction began in April 1963 and ended in December 1964.
The building’s dramatic form comes from eight curved reinforced-concrete shells that rise into a cross-shaped plan. Stainless-steel cladding catches the light, while a detached bell tower stands beside the cathedral. The main structure is about 39.4 metres high, and the tower reaches 61.6 metres.
A common mix-up is confusing this Tokyo landmark with St. Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco, whose later design was also influenced by Tange’s work. The Tokyo cathedral underwent a major renovation in 2007, including repairs to its shell and stained glass.
