Shark Tank is the United States business-investment show adapted from the Dragon's Den format.
The American programme premiered on ABC in 2009 and features entrepreneurs pitching businesses to a panel of investors known as Sharks. Like the British show, it centres on requested funding, company valuation, equity, negotiation, and the possibility of a deal.
The different animal names reflect local branding rather than a different basic concept. British investors are Dragons, while the US panel is presented as Sharks. Other countries have used their own titles and investor labels for adaptations of the international format.
Shark Tank is sometimes described as the original show because it became especially prominent in the United States. Historically, however, Dragon's Den itself is derived from the Japanese Money Tigers format, and Shark Tank is one of its international adaptations.
