The boy separated from his father in Mr. Bean’s Holiday is named Stepan.
Stepan is played by Max Baldry, who was a child actor when the film was made. Mr. Bean accidentally causes the boy to miss his train after filming the platform with his new camcorder. Bean then attempts to get Stepan back to his father, Emil, while travelling through France.
The relationship between Bean and Stepan provides the film’s emotional centre. Although Bean creates many problems through impulsive decisions and poor communication, he remains determined to reunite the boy with his father. Their journey also allows the film to use the character’s familiar silent-comedy style in a larger adventure story.
Stepan is sometimes confused with Sabine, a French actress who joins the journey later. Sabine is an adult character played by Emma de Caunes, whereas Stepan is the child whose separation starts the main plot.
