The boiler room manager in Spirited Away is Kamaji. He operates the bathhouse’s enormous boiler room and directs the soot sprites, known in Japanese folklore as susuwatari, as they carry coal and keep the fires burning.
When Chihiro enters the spirit world, Haku tells her to ask Kamaji for work. Kamaji initially refuses to employ her directly, but he helps her by sending Lin to take her to Yubaba, the witch who controls the bathhouse. His decision gives Chihiro a path to a job and protection inside the spirit realm.
Kamaji is often called the “boiler-man” or “boiler grandad” in descriptions of the film. His many arms allow him to manage the room’s equipment, while his gruff appearance contrasts with his kindness toward Chihiro. He also gives her train tickets later in the story, helping her travel to Zeniba’s home.
Lin is a bathhouse worker who assists Chihiro, while Haku is Yubaba’s apprentice and a river spirit. Neither manages the boiler room.
