What year did the Ghibli Museum open?

The story behind the answer

The Ghibli Museum opened in 2001. Its official opening date was October 1, 2001, in Mitaka, Tokyo.

The museum was created to showcase Studio Ghibli’s art, animation techniques, and imaginative worlds. It stands in Inokashira Park and combines the functions of an art museum, children’s museum, and animation exhibition space. Rather than presenting only conventional galleries, it includes production materials, interactive displays, a cinema for exclusive short films, a café, a bookstore, and a rooftop garden.

Hayao Miyazaki personally designed the museum, using the same kind of visual planning associated with his films. Visitors encounter references to works such as My Neighbor Totoro, including a replica Catbus. Planning began in 1998, construction started in March 2000, and the museum opened after roughly three years of development. The date is sometimes confused with 1999 or 2003, but those years do not mark the museum’s opening.
