The Black Speech inscription on J.R.R. Tolkien’s One Ring is known as the Ring-verse.
The inscription consists of two lines from a longer verse describing the Rings of Power: “One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,” followed by lines about bringing and binding the rings in darkness. It is written in the Black Speech of Mordor and appears only when the Ring is heated.
The verse summarizes Sauron’s plan to control the other Rings of Power. The One Ring was created in the fires of Mount Doom, and its power was tied directly to Sauron’s own power and will.
Readers sometimes call the inscription simply the “One Ring poem,” but Ring-verse is the standard name used for the passage. It should also not be confused with Elvish poems such as “Namárië,” which are written in Tolkien’s invented Elvish languages rather than the Black Speech.
