What is the name of the battle where Théoden dies in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings?

The story behind the answer

Théoden dies during the Battle of the Pelennor Fields in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. The battle takes place before the walls of Minas Tirith during the War of the Ring.

Théoden, king of Rohan, leads his riders to Gondor’s aid after answering the call for help. He is mortally wounded when his horse Snowmane falls, and he speaks with Éowyn shortly before dying. Éowyn has disguised herself as a warrior and helps defeat the Witch-king of Angmar.

The battle is often confused with the Battle of Helm’s Deep, another major conflict involving Rohan. Helm’s Deep occurs earlier, while the Pelennor battle is the climactic defense of Minas Tirith. The battlefield’s name comes from the Pelennor, the farmlands and open country lying outside the city’s walls.
