What is the name of the bathhouse in 'Spirited Away'?

The story behind the answer

The bathhouse in “Spirited Away” is called Aburaya, written 油屋 in Japanese. The name can be translated literally as “oil house” or “oil shop,” though the building functions as a supernatural bathhouse where gods and spirits come to bathe.

Aburaya is owned and operated by Yubaba, the powerful witch who controls the spirit-world business. After Chihiro asks for work, Yubaba takes part of her name and renames her Sen. This makes the bathhouse more than a setting: it becomes the place where Chihiro must work, mature, and remember who she really is.

The name is easy to confuse with “yuya,” another Japanese term associated with a bathhouse. The film’s sign uses the characters 油屋, whose standard reading is Aburaya. Several real Japanese hot-spring inns and bathhouses influenced the film’s visual design, including Dōgo Onsen and architectural sites studied by Studio Ghibli, but those real locations are not the name of the fictional bathhouse.
