Atrahasis is the Babylonian flood hero in the Atrahasis epic, an earlier parallel to Noah.
The Old Babylonian Atrahasis Epic is preserved on clay tablets and is usually dated to the 18th century BCE. In it, the god Enki warns Atrahasis about a catastrophic flood and instructs him to build a boat, preserve living creatures, and survive the destruction.
The story shares important motifs with later flood narratives, including divine warning, a specially built vessel, preservation of life, and a sacrifice after survival. It also differs in its explanation of why the flood occurs and in its cast of gods. Atrahasis and Utnapishtim are related figures in Mesopotamian tradition, but they belong to different literary versions and should not be treated as interchangeable names.
