What is the name of the Assassin's Creed protagonist from the city of Masyaf?

The story behind the answer

Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad is the Assassin's Creed protagonist from Masyaf.

Altaïr serves as the central historical character in the first Assassin's Creed game. He is a highly skilled Assassin whose rank is reduced after he breaks the Brotherhood's code during a mission. His master, Al Mualim, orders him to regain his status by carrying out a series of assassinations.

Masyaf is the mountain fortress that functions as the Assassins' headquarters in the game's medieval storyline. The settlement is located in modern-day Syria and is tied to the historical Nizari Ismaili fortress of Masyaf.

Altaïr's story spans more than one period in the series. Later games, including Assassin's Creed Revelations, revisit his life and show how his knowledge changes the Assassin Brotherhood.
