Aveline de Grandpré is the first playable female protagonist in the Assassin's Creed series.
Aveline stars in Assassin's Creed III: Liberation, which was released in 2012 for the PlayStation Vita. She is a Louisiana-based Assassin of mixed French and African heritage, and her story is set in New Orleans and the surrounding region during the eighteenth century.
The game gives Aveline three disguises: Lady, Slave, and Assassin. Each identity changes how she moves through society and what kinds of actions are available to her. This disguise system is a defining feature of Liberation and reflects the game's focus on class, race, gender, and colonial power.
Evie Frye later became the first female protagonist in a mainline Assassin's Creed game, Assassin's Creed Syndicate, but she was not the series' first playable woman. Kassandra and Aya also became prominent female characters in later releases.
