Edward Kenway is the ancestor experienced through the Animus in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.

Edward is a Welsh privateer who becomes involved with Assassins and Templars during the Golden Age of Piracy. Unlike a committed Assassin at the beginning, he is initially driven largely by personal ambition and the hope of gaining wealth. His experiences gradually change his priorities and loyalties.

Black Flag is set mainly in the Caribbean during the early 18th century. Edward commands the ship Jackdaw, explores islands and ports, and encounters historical pirates including Blackbeard, Anne Bonny, and Mary Read. Naval travel and ship combat are central parts of the game.

Edward is part of the Kenway family that links several series entries. His son is Haytham Kenway, a major character in Assassin's Creed III, and his grandson is Ratonhnhaké:ton, also known as Connor. Edward should not be confused with the modern-day employee whose genetic memories are being studied.
