Answer
The unnamed Abstergo employee
The unnamed Abstergo employee frames the modern-day story in Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag.
Unlike earlier main entries, Black Flag does not give its modern-day protagonist a personal name. The player controls an Abstergo Entertainment employee who investigates the memories of Edward Kenway through a version of the Animus. This framing device connects the pirate-era adventure to Abstergo’s commercial and corporate plans.
The character is often casually called “the player character” or “the unnamed protagonist.” Desmond Miles does not return as the playable modern-day character after the conclusion of his story in Assassin’s Creed III. Layla Hassan becomes the modern-day protagonist much later, beginning with Assassin’s Creed Origins.
The historical sections take place in the Caribbean during the early 18th century. The modern-day sections occur at Abstergo’s Montreal offices, reflecting the series’ recurring contrast between historical memories and contemporary conflict between the Templars and Assassins.
