What is the name of the ancient kingdom in C.S. Lewis’s novel Till We Have Faces?

The story behind the answer

Glome is the ancient kingdom in C.S. Lewis’s novel Till We Have Faces.

Till We Have Faces: A Myth Retold, published in 1956, reworks the ancient story of Cupid and Psyche. Lewis places the action in the fictional kingdom of Glome, where the narrator, Queen Orual, reflects on her family, her rule, and her troubled relationship with her half-sister Psyche.

The novel is substantially different in tone from the Narnia books. It is a psychological and philosophical retelling told from Orual’s perspective, and it explores love, jealousy, identity, suffering, and the difficulty of seeing oneself honestly. The setting’s ancient atmosphere comes from Lewis’s engagement with classical mythology.

Glome is sometimes confused with Narnia because both are invented places in Lewis’s fiction. Narnia is the land of the seven-book children’s series, while Glome belongs specifically to this mature mythological novel.
