The Animus is the device used to view genetic memories in Assassin's Creed.
In the series, the Animus allows a modern user to access memories inherited through genetic material from an ancestor. The machine presents those memories as an interactive simulation, enabling modern characters such as Desmond Miles to experience the lives of historical Assassins.
The device is central to the series' structure because it connects contemporary scenes with historical gameplay. Later stories introduce different Animus systems and adaptations, but the basic idea remains the same: reconstructing ancestral memories for observation or exploration.
The Apple of Eden is a powerful Isu artifact, not the memory-viewing machine. Eagle Vision is an Assassin ability that helps identify people and objects, while the Bleeding Effect describes memories or skills carried over from prolonged Animus exposure. These terms are related to the mythology but are not synonyms for Animus.
