Shark Tank is the American version of the international format behind BBC's Dragon's Den.
The US programme premiered on ABC in 2009 and uses the same basic concept: entrepreneurs present businesses to wealthy investors, who may offer money in exchange for equity. The American investors are called sharks, while the UK investors are called dragons.
Shark Tank was adapted from the Japanese television format Money Tigers, which also inspired the British version. Although the programmes share the pitching structure, their panels, networks, presenter histories and terminology differ.
The American title is not The Apprentice or The Profit, both of which are separate business-related television programmes. Shark Tank is the specific English-language adaptation associated with entrepreneur-investor pitches.
