What is the name of the American version of Dragon's Den?

The story behind the answer

Shark Tank is the American version of the business-investment format known in the UK as Dragon's Den.

The US programme premiered on ABC in 2009. Entrepreneurs pitch businesses to a panel of wealthy investors, who may offer money in exchange for equity or another share of the venture. The investors are called Sharks rather than Dragons, but the central pitch-and-negotiation structure is closely related.

Shark Tank is part of a wider international franchise based on the Japanese format Money Tigers. Different countries use local titles and local business personalities, while keeping the basic idea of entrepreneurs seeking investment in front of a panel.

The programme should not be confused with The Profit, another American business television show focused on investment and business advice. Shark Tank is the established US title for the format associated with Dragon's Den.
