Shark Tank is the American adaptation of the investment format used by Britain's Dragon's Den.
The American series premiered on ABC in 2009 and features entrepreneurs pitching products and companies to a panel of investors known as sharks. Like the British programme, it centres on negotiations over investment, company valuation and equity ownership.
The programmes use different names and national panels, but their underlying format comes from the Japanese television concept Money Tigers. The British series calls its investors Dragons, whereas the American series uses Sharks, creating a distinct identity for each market.
Shark Tank is not simply another name for the British programme. It is a separately produced American version with its own hosts, investors, businesses and broadcast history. That distinction explains why a company may appear in one national series without appearing in the other.
