What is the name of the American adaptation of the Dragons' Den television format?

The story behind the answer

Shark Tank is the American adaptation of the Dragons' Den television format.

The US programme places entrepreneurs before a panel of wealthy investors, who decide whether to offer money in exchange for equity or another form of business stake. This keeps the central pitch-and-negotiation structure associated with Dragons' Den while using a different animal metaphor for its investors.

Shark Tank premiered in the United States in 2009. The programme has featured investors such as Mark Cuban, Barbara Corcoran, Kevin O'Leary, Lori Greiner and Daymond John, although its panel has changed over time.

A common mix-up is treating Shark Tank as a direct British title change. It is instead the United States version of a wider international format, while the UK production retains the name Dragons' Den.
