The American adaptation of the Dragons' Den investment-pitch format is Shark Tank.
Shark Tank premiered in the United States in 2009 and uses the same broad concept: entrepreneurs enter a studio, present a company or product and request investment from a panel of business figures. In the US version, the investors are called sharks rather than dragons.
The programme is part of a large international franchise descended from Japan's Money Tigers. Local editions change the panel, language, broadcaster and business environment, while preserving the central negotiation between founders and investors.
Shark Tank is therefore not the original source of the format, nor is it simply another name for the British programme. It is the US version. The title reflects the American branding choice of using predatory sea imagery instead of the British show's dragon theme.
