What is the name of the active volcano on Tanna Island in Vanuatu?

The story behind the answer

Mount Yasur is the active volcano on Tanna Island in Vanuatu. It rises about 361 metres above sea level near Sulphur Bay and is famous for its persistent explosions, glowing crater, and relatively easy access compared with many active volcanoes.

Yasur is a stratovolcano formed by volcanic activity along the Vanuatu subduction zone, where the Indo-Australian Plate is being forced beneath the Pacific Plate. Its summit contains a broad crater, and eruptions are commonly described as Strombolian or Vulcanian, producing bursts of ash, gas, and volcanic material.

The volcano has reportedly remained active for centuries. Captain James Cook is said to have been drawn toward Tanna in 1774 by the glow from Yasur, which helped give the mountain its reputation as a Pacific “lighthouse.” Vanuatu authorities monitor its activity and publish alert levels for residents and visitors.

Mount Yasur also has cultural importance on Tanna. It is associated with the John Frum movement, whose followers regard the volcano and the surrounding Sulphur Bay area as sacred. The other options are volcanoes in different countries.
