What is the name of the 2016 film adaptation of the Assassin's Creed video-game series?

The story behind the answer

The 2016 film adaptation of the Assassin's Creed video-game series is titled Assassin's Creed.

Directed by Justin Kurzel, the film stars Michael Fassbender as Callum Lynch and Aguilar de Nerha. Callum is recruited by Abstergo Industries and uses an advanced Animus to relive Aguilar's memories in fifteenth-century Spain.

The movie uses the franchise's familiar conflict between Assassins and Templars but tells a new story rather than directly adapting one particular game. Its historical sections are set during the Spanish Inquisition, while much of the modern plot takes place around Abstergo's research program.

The film was released in December 2016. It should not be confused with game titles such as Assassin's Creed Origins or Assassin's Creed Valhalla. Fassbender also served as a producer, and the cast includes Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, and Michael K. Williams.
