The 1980 Roald Dahl book about a quarrelling married couple is The Twits.
The book centres on Mr Twit and Mrs Twit, an unpleasant couple who play cruel practical jokes on each other. Their behaviour also affects the animals they keep, including a family of monkeys. The story uses grotesque comedy to show how ugliness of character can be more important than appearance.
The Twits was illustrated by Quentin Blake, whose energetic drawings became closely associated with Dahl’s children’s books. It was published after George’s Marvellous Medicine and before The BFG, placing it among Dahl’s shorter, comic works for younger readers.
The title is sometimes confused with Dahl’s poetry collection Dirty Beasts or with The Minpins, another late children’s book. Neither features the married pair Mr and Mrs Twit, whose escalating tricks provide the central plot.
