Helen Robson married Sam Walton on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1943, in Claremore, Oklahoma. She was a University of Oklahoma graduate with a degree in finance, and she became an important partner in the Walton family’s early retail life. The couple had four children: Robson, John, Jim and Alice.

Helen was involved as Sam built the business that preceded Walmart. In 1945, the couple opened a Ben Franklin five-and-dime store in Newport, Arkansas. They moved to Bentonville in 1950, where Sam opened a discount store that helped lay the groundwork for Walmart’s later expansion. Walmart itself opened its first store in Rogers, Arkansas, in 1962.

A common mix-up is confusing Helen Walton with other members of the Walton family, especially Alice Walton, their daughter. Helen also supported philanthropy and community projects, and after Sam’s death in 1992, his Walmart ownership passed to Helen and their children.
