Rolex’s watch that displays the day of the week fully spelled out at 12 o’clock is the Day-Date.
Rolex introduced the Day-Date in 1956 as the reference 6511. It combined a date window at 3 o’clock with a day-of-the-week aperture at 12 o’clock. Unlike many watches that abbreviate the day, the Day-Date was designed to show the word in full, subject to the language selected for the day disc.
The watch became strongly associated with prestige and public figures, and its nickname, “President,” came from its distinctive semicircular bracelet rather than from the official model name. The Day-Date has traditionally been made in precious metals, while the Datejust has appeared in a much broader range of materials.
A frequent mistake is confusing the Day-Date with the Datejust. The Datejust shows the date, but the full day display is the defining complication of the Day-Date.
