Robert De Niro’s character in Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver is named Travis Bickle.
Bickle is a lonely, insomniac Vietnam veteran who works nights as a taxi driver in New York City. Through his isolated perspective, the film presents a tense portrait of urban alienation and psychological deterioration.
Taxi Driver was released in 1976 and was written by Paul Schrader. Jodie Foster played Iris, a young runaway whom Bickle tries to rescue, while Cybill Shepherd portrayed campaign worker Betsy.
The character’s name is sometimes confused with De Niro’s other Scorsese roles, including boxer Jake LaMotta in Raging Bull and comedian Rupert Pupkin in The King of Comedy. Taxi Driver also introduced the famous line, “You talkin’ to me?”
